I'm feeling back in the game with the GLTAS fan art now. I just needed a break from it because I was starting to feel creatively stifled and pressured in a way to do art that I didn't want to do. It's not that anyone was directly telling me to do anything but it's just more about people's reactions and the overall dialog in the fandom that just made me feel a bit alienated. I think this hiatus is to blame for the increased focus on Razaya. I mean, it was getting annoying before, but the shippers got progressively worse when they had no new material from the show to think about.
But there are a handful of people in the fandom who are still interested in seeing art that is more diverse character wise, and they make the experience of creating art for this fandom an enjoyable experience. So I just won't concern myself with the rest of them. And I feel certain that things will get much more interesting when the show returns. Can't wait!

Hiatuses are a real strain on any fandom, that's for sure. It doesn't help that this one was sudden and there's just such an overall mess that I don't think the fandom will recover from completely.
That aside, I agree. I've honestly found that drawing characters no one else ever thinks about/cares for makes for a far more richly rewarding fandom experience. Having been that person whose eyes light up whenever I see an obscure character drawn by a great artist or an artist I like, I want someone else to have that experience, too. And seeing other artists draw those kinds of characters is a really powerful synergy, imho.
I think I'm spoiled somewhat by TMNT fandom right now (seriously, seeing all this Splinter art is like feast after famine for me), but I'm hoping new GLTAS episodes -and thus new characters and the return of other one-offs- will inspire others to think outside the box. ('Course, I'm a fine one to talk as I draw pretty much nothing but Tomar-Re and Gi'ata, but eh, I have no regrets!)
